More and more people are now aware of the powerful benefits of meditation. Wanting to enjoy all those benefits, you resolved to incorporate it into your daily routine. But starting a meditation practice is no easy feat. In fact, some people encounter some problems along the way that they end up giving up after a few sessions.

Here are 3 common meditation problems that plague beginners.

Sleepiness

We all know that meditation is relaxing. Most people start meditating in the hopes of alleviating stress and anxiety. Because of its calming and relaxing effect, some people find themselves taking a nap in the middle of the session.

To prevent sleepiness, you may want to change the time of the day you meditate. If you usually meditate at the end of the day, we highly recommend that you do so early in the morning. Sure, you’ll need to get up earlier than usual, but meditating first thing in the morning will help energize your body and start your day on a positive note.

Boredom

We all know that meditation is beneficial to our mind and body, but some people think that sitting still for about 20 minutes can be a waste of time.

Living a fast-paced life, most people have crazy schedule. They have lots of meetings to attend to, deadlines to meet and appointments to go to. During meditation sessions, they find themselves bored and they’re minds wandering about the tasks that are waiting for them.

To calm a busy mind, we suggest that you keep your mind occupied with a single task. Focus on your breathing and count every breath cycle. This will keep your mind from wandering off to anything.

Aches and pains

Meditation relaxes our mind and body. But sitting still for about 15 to 30 minutes can be uncomfortable and even painful, especially for beginners. It can be difficult, if not impossible, to focus if all you can think of is how painful your back or your legs are.

If you find yourself in the same situation, we suggest that you make some adjustments into your practice. Maybe you should sit on a meditation cushion, so you’re a few inches off the ground. Also, keep your posture in check. Keep your back and pelvis straight to prevent back pain.
