  • What is a Mala?

    Mala’s are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths while meditating, or the repetitions of a buddha's name.  This practice is known in Sanskrit as japa. Malas are typically made with 18, 27, 54 or 108 beads. In Tibetan Buddhism, malas of 108 beads are used. From our friend Ky Gabriel at Peacock Arts, "It is said that 108 times is the ideal number to take the prayer from a head space into an embodied heart space and when using a Mala there is no need to count, you can let the beads do it for you!"

    The increasing popularity of Yoga has made Malas fashionable. With strands of 108 beads plus a "guru" bead traditionally used for meditation and prayer, designers are making mala necklaces now that combine gemstones imbued with potent energies and sacred meaning to infuse your practice. However, most Malas are worn around the wrist. When looking at a Mala, notice the knots in between the beads. These knots represent our thoughts in meditation. The knots stop the beads from touching each other, just like our thoughts should not touch each other. As a "pro" tip, Ky states, "I recommend never buying Malas that aren't hand knotted."

  • Look for Opportunities and Healing in October

    Insights into the month of October from our dear friend Sophie Rose:

    October has arrived, and it's time to take care of business during the first two weeks of the month. We'll want to sort things out in our personal and social life and make adjustments or clear up some issues. We will also become more discriminating or analytical in our relationships (Mars and Venus in Virgo). 

    Since last December, we might have pushed to find a way to manage our need for relationships and our desire for freedom, or find a social setting to express our deepest, most original self. Those of us who weren't successful will now feel the frustration and risk to create conflict by recklessly standing up for their beliefs (last Jupiter-Uranus opposition). 

    If we've been weighing the pros and cons of a big decision, we'll probably be ready to make it around October 8th and 9th.

    Jupiter enters Scorpio on October 10th, where it will stay until November 2018: growth will happen through deep sharing, delving into emotions, exploring taboos, looking into our shadows. This brings also great risks of power abuse and manipulations, while more and more people will become conscious of the necessity to act together on things that really matter. Developing intimacy with one another or joining forces around a passion will bring a lot of expansion and opportunities.

    Cultivate loving relationships

    In today’s fast-paced life, a lot of people are so focused on their career that they tend to forget to make time for their loved ones. No matter how busy you are, try to connect with your family and friends, even if it’s just for quick chat over coffee. The more you do it, the happier you will be.

    Eat a healthy diet

    Eating healthy and nutritious foods is essential in creating a healthy body and mind. However, eating healthy doesn’t mean depriving yourself with the food you love. If you love chocolates or cookies, then go ahead and eat some. Just try not to eat too much.

    Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Limit consumption of processed foods as they can accelerate aging and weaken health. Remember, you are what you eat.

    Feed your intelligence

    Set aside time for learning and experiencing new things. Games like chess, scrabble, crossword puzzles and Sudoku can sharpen the mind and prevent cognitive decline.

    Meditation

    Meditation helps restore balance to our mind and body. It can improve your mood, lower blood pressure, alleviate stress and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

    Practicing meditation, even for just 15 minutes a day can make a big difference. That means you can still practice meditation no matter how busy your schedule is. You can do it in your room, in your office or on the way home. Just sit quietly, clear your mind and focus on your breathing.

    We live in a diverse world – one that is filled with a number of gods and religions. Because of that, spiritual wellness may mean different things to different people. But in general, spiritual health involves a person’s purpose, beliefs and values.

    A lot of people may not understand how important spiritual health is, but its significance is stronger than what most people may realize. In fact, it puts harmony in one’s life and the people around them. A spiritually deficient person, on the other hand, can become isolated, confused and fragile.

    Here are some ideas to improve your spiritual health.

    Practice forgiveness

    Sometimes, the people we love may hurt us. It’s not always easy to forgive and move on when you’re on the receiving end. But holding on to grudges, resentment and animosity will only poison you with extreme negativity. This causes even more pain because by holding on to grudges; you are actually keeping the wounds wide open. Practice forgiveness and be happier.

    Be quiet

    Silence is not only relaxing, calming and therapeutic; it can also help improve your therapeutic health. Set aside a time for solitude, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day. With the chaos and confusion of a frantic lifestyle, it can be difficult to hear the spiritual truths that often come in the form of a still small voice. Take this opportunity to come in contact with your inner thoughts and feelings.

    Take time to meditate

    Take time everyday to pray, meditate and be alone, even for just 5 to 10 minutes a day. In addition to stress relief, meditation can help us achieve peace of mind, bring our unruly mind under control and allow us to achieve what we want. Ultimately, it is a great way to maintain good spiritual health.

    Take time for self-renewal

    Becoming more in tune with your spiritual side is the key to improving your spiritual health. Take a moment to assess your spiritual health by asking yourself the following questions: Who am I? What is my purpose? What is important to me?

    Aloha Yves Nager Sunset imageThrough my last 2 Newsletters I told you two stories which I experienced at the beginning of my transformational journey 7 years ago and recently in Hawaii. I also shared with you some first tools, one important tool was the power of gratitude. Today I will share more steps with you, how you can begin to transform your life and align it to the things which really matter to you. The first important secret which got revealed to me is how beneficial moments of solitude are. How many times did you spent time just by yourself recently? I learned that many are afraid to go to such a place, because they have some initial fears about stepping out of their (uncomfortable) comfort zone. For me, truly being with myself and embracing myself in challenging times was one of the first acts of getting out of my comfort zone. For the first time in my life, I let those senses of pain and sadness to come arise to be naturally transformed using the tools I learned such as meditation and reading books with spiritual wisdom and love like “Mastery of Love” or “The Four Agreements”. Based on my own experience and many similar stories others told me, I can guarantee you that synchronicities and miracles start to be revealed to you as soon you step out of your comfort zone and when you stay open and receptive. When I look back now on the difficult time I had 7 year ago, I understand that this heartbreaking experience I wrote about a week ago was most beneficial for my ongoing journey. Through this experience I got absolutely clear about how my ideal relationship would look like but most importantly I could start finding peace, self-love and harmony within myself again. The next step I applied after I spent some beneficial time in solitude was to take action again. I took action again towards the direction of what I consciously chose to experience next. The very first thing I did was actually skydiving in an attempt to get myself out of my unhappy mental state and back into my physical body. The fastest way to get unstuck is to do what you’ve never done before. Of course, you don’t need to take such an intense action after you felt stuck in life the way I did, but you can always take the first small steps of what you would like to create in your life already starting from today. Many people became aware of the law of attraction over the recent years. There are basically two scenarios: either you create a positive life through positive thoughts, or you allow negative thoughts to bring troubles to you. So the question is which scenario you consciously choose to experience for yourself. The last important insight I would like to share with you for today is how important it is for our well-being and happiness to be in a state of “no tension”. There are two simple aspects to this principle: The first is to act from that place of “no tension”, the place of peace and calm that all of us have inside. The second is to do all you can think to do and then let go.
