    Just as fitness is an approach to training the body, meditation is an approach to training the mind. Meditation offers several benefits to our body, so we encourage you to try it and start today. It isn’t always easy, especially in the beginning, but you’ll get better and better as you practice.

    Here are a few tips to get you started with meditation.

    Start simple

    Start with the most common, most basic and most useful form of meditation – breathing meditation. Practice mindful breathing whenever you feel stressed or anxious. Sit comfortably in a chair or on the floor. Clear your mind and focus on your breathing. Inhale through your nose and gently exhale through your mouth. This will only take a few minutes of your time. Plus, you can do it anywhere you want.

    Do it first thing in the morning

    Meditation is best practiced in the morning, when your energy is full and the sleepiness of the morning has worn off. Make sure you’re wide awake when you attempt to meditate. Otherwise, you may find yourself falling asleep. Starting your day in peace and silence makes the whole day go better.

    Don’t worry whether you’re doing it right or not

    A lot of people worry about where to sit, how to sit or whether or not they should close their eyes. Please know that there is no perfect way to do it.

    If you’re more comfortable sitting on a chair, on the floor or on your bed, then go ahead. It doesn’t matter where you do it, just as long as you’re in a quiet and comfortable place.

    It usually takes practice

    Some people get frustrated because they find it hard to clear their mind. Meditation is not easy to master. You won’t be good at it for a while. As a beginner, you may find it difficult to sit for an hour and think of nothing. Before you start, we suggest that you remove every distraction you can think of – turn off your mobile phone and TV, lock the door and use the restroom if you need to. If your mind wanders, simply start over and return to your breath. Don’t beat yourself up about your wild mind.

    Peace and quiet is a precious commodity these days. A quiet mind is what most people are striving for in one way or another. With family, work, economic pressures and technology, it is really magical when our busy minds go quiet.

    Meditation can help you become more peaceful, more attentive to things around you, less worried about discomfort and more focused in your tasks. But if you’re just starting out, it can be exasperating when your mind doesn’t cooperate.

    Here’s how to quiet your racing thoughts during meditation.

    Concentrate on your breathing

    Distracting thoughts are extremely common during meditation. When you mind wanders and you then realize that you’re losing the meditative connection you were trying to build, simply return your focus to your breathing. Breathe through your nose and then breathe out slowly through your mouth.

    Get it all out first

    Do your thoughts run something like this? I need to pick up Mike’s dry cleaning this afternoon. Must pay attention. Oh shoot! I forgot to pay the electric bill. Okay, I’ll do that later. Wait, what should I make for dinner?

    Before you start, we suggest that you get a pen and paper. List down all the things you need to do so you won’t forget about them. Make sure everything is written there. Now that it’s done, prepare for meditation.

    Create a sacred space for meditation

    Some people find it beneficial to have a special place for meditation. It does not necessarily have to be a big space. Just as long as it’s a quiet place where you’ll feel comfortable to sit, relax and meditate.

    You can place some pillows, a yoga mat or a chair to help you feel more comfortable. Use this space for meditation purposes only. So if you come to this spot, it tells your brain that it’s time for meditation.

    Be easy with yourself

    If you can’t stay focused, then that’s okay. You might feel a little frustrated at first, thinking you’re doing it wrong. But the truth is, there is no perfect way to do it. Be easy with yourself.
