  • Essential Elements for Your Meditation Space

    We create spaces in our homes for activities that are important for us. We have a specific space for eating, sleeping, bathing, cooking, and studying. Some people even have a dedicated space for their arts and crafts. If you are planning to start your home meditation practice, we suggest that you create a meditation space in your home.

    Here are 5 essential elements for your meditation space.

    Altar

    Depending on your taste and background, you may place pictures of saints or gurus in your space. Some people place a statue of Buddha or go with one of Hotei, Tsa’tsa, Jizo, Tara or Kuan Yun. You may also add some candles, flowers, incense, crystals or fountains. Your altar should reflect the tranquil inner state you’re seeking. It should express something that is sacred to you.

    Traces of nature

    Try incorporating some plants, flowers or even cacti into your space to make you feel closer to nature. Adding bits of nature to your meditation room also adds life and color to it without creating visible distractions.

    Music

    We all have different tastes when it comes to music. What’s relaxing for me may not be relaxing for you. Find songs that can help you calm and de-stress. Play it at low volume as you meditate. There are lots of soft, instrumental music that are specifically used for yoga, meditation and holistic living. Try exploring those and see how they work for you. For beginners, you may also use an audio for guided meditation.

    Pillows or mats

    Keeping still for 15 to 30 minutes can be difficult, especially for beginners. Placing some pillows and mats in your meditation space will help you stay comfortable. You want to focus on achieving mindfulness during your meditation sessions, not trying to ignore your aching back.

    Natural light

    If you meditate in the morning, use sheer curtains to ensure that enough sunlight will enter your meditation room. But if you prefer meditating at night, you may want to dim the light or turn it off altogether. Harsh, unnatural light can be distracting, especially when you’re trying to focus inwardly.
